Project AWARE
Kate Wilkins spends a month collecting rubbish from the ocean
Kate Wilkins is 30 years old this year. She is a scuba diver(潜水员). Recently she spends two hours a day cleaning up the ocean.
Kate Wilkins calls herself “the ocean janitor”. She has collected about 89 kilograms of ocean rubbish—from chip packets to a electric scooter (滑板车) and tent. “Marine debris (海洋垃圾) are one of the greatest threats to our oceans,” Ms Wilkins said. “The first time I dived at each spot I wasn’t shocked—but when I went back a week later and found just as much or more rubbish I was really disappointed.”
Over a month Ms Wilkins found more than 12 pairs of sunglasses, which she will recycle, countless knives and pairs of scissors and hundreds of pieces of fishing gear.
Ms Wilkins is moving to Western Australia soon but she will continue to pick up rubbish on her dives, to help the environment and help educate the people. She was also aiming to raise awareness for Sea Shepherd and Project AWARE.
